Michael Sampson: Currents: "Hello, I'm a PC"

Peter O’Kelly posted an interest link to Michael Sampson blog (want to credit Peter for highlighting this instead of faking that I found it myself ;-) )

Cool ! and Michael’s post and above all findings make sense, at least to another “die hard”  PC user.

Back in February I bought the Macbook Air, simply because it is the coolest hardware I had seen in years.

Because I will never will fully go for MAC OS I chose to run Mac OS with Parallells running Vista : Bad performance and inpredictable behavior. Next I chose the bootcamp route which makes you choose at startup what OS you’d like to run. I found out I never run Mac OS simply because it adds no value at all to me.

So .. last month I reinstalled my machine running Windows Vista natively and by that regained some 30 GB and running a very fast and reliable Windows Vista install ation on the coolest hardware :-)

Personally I can’t wait for Michael to give Windows 7 a try …

I switched from Windows to Mac. I had used Windows as my main computing platform for 12 years, and was frankly fed up with its instability. Well, after 5 years on the Mac platform, today I switched back to Windows, and demoted my MacBook Pro to a lab machine. And I switched back for a very simple reason: Windows is better for business.

Microsoft Office is better. Support for scanning documents is better. Compatibility with mobile devices is better, eg, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry. Business card scanning is better (make that "possible"). Yadda, yadda, yadda. No more compromises and missed opportunities.

So ends the Apple love.

Microsoft workshop op Lifehacking Academy Groningen

Gisteren heb ik een workshop gegeven op Lifehacking Academy Groningen.

Op de vorige 2 Lifehacking Academies in Arnhem en Amsterdam heb ik unconferences gedaan over ‘ het nieuwe werken’. Dit keer wilde ik wat onderwerpen doen die (letterlijk) dichter bij huis zijn. Vragen zoals hoe je makkelijker en beter je digitale media (foto’s, muziek, Video, DVD) kunt beheren. Hoe maak je gemakkelijk een backup van alle PC’s in huis (PC’s en MACs), enz.

Ondanks de goede opkomst in Groningen was de bezetting van mijn workshop, en ook die van een aantal andere, erg mager. Jammer. Aan de andere kant wel begrijpelijk, want er was gewoonweg (te) veel informatie en kiezen blijkt moeilijk.

Ik wil de mensen die mijn workshop hebben bijgewoond nogmaals bedanken voor hun vragen en interactie en voor iedereen die het heeft gemist is hier de presentatie:

Onderzoek: pc's verstoken veel energie

Automatiseringgids heeft een interessante post over energieverbruik van PC's.

TCO Development, een Zweeds onderzoeksbureau, heeft becijferd dat het energieverbruik van ICT-middelen zoals pc's met 80 procent kan worden gereduceerd. Volgens de onderzoekers zijn een paar eenvoudige maatregelen voldoende.

... Volgens TCO is meer dan helft van de energie nodig voor apparatuur die ongebruikt aan staat. Het uitzetten kan automatisch, door de systemen in een slaapstand te zetten of handmatig, door de knop om te halen. ...

DiNovo: mooi Windows Mediacenter keyboard

Ik zag vandaag een leuke uitbreiding voor mijn Vista mediacenter in het tijdschrift Pc Consument: de Logitech DiNovo. Een superklein keyboard / afstandsbediening met bluetooth. Hij is nog wel prijzig, de adviesprijs is 149,99 en via de prijzensites kwam ik 129,90 tegen als goedkoopste prijs op dit moment.

Mac OS X lekt vijf keer meer dan Windows

Dit soort referntiekaders zijn altijd goed om te hebben. Zo'n discussie over security is altijd relatief ...

... In vergelijking met Windows XP en Vista is Apple's OS X zo lek als een mandje. In 2007 werden er bij OS X 243 gebreken gevonden. Bij XP en Vista waren dit er 44.

In totaal werden er in het besturingsysteem van Apple dit jaar 243 beveiligingslekken aangetroffen die moesten worden gedicht, tegenover 44 beveiligingslekken voor Windows XP en Vista, becijferde blogger George Ou.

234 van deze lekken binnen OS X vielen onder de categorie ernstig. Ook hier scoorde Microsoft een stuk beter, want binnen XP en Vista werden in totaal maar 23 ernstige problemen aangetroffen. Toch is Apple op dit gebied niet per se de verliezer te noemen, want in de categorie zeer ernstige lekken (de zwaarste categorie voor veiligheidslekken) werd er binnen OS X dit jaar geen enkel beveiligingslek aangetroffen. Microsoft had daarin minder succes, het bedrijf zag zich genoodzaakt om vier zeer ernstige veiligheidslekken te dichten binnen XP en Vista. ...

Eén miljoen Vista-licenties voor Nederlandse markt

1 miljoen licenties toont aan dat de adoptie aanzienlijk is. Dat plaatst ook eerdere discussies rondom klachten over Vista in een goed perspectief. Natuurlijk kunnen er klachten ontstaan rondom nieuwe produkten en zeker als ze zo'n grote impact hebben op het eco systeem van hard- en softwareleveranciers.

Het is een jaar geleden dat Microsoft de zakelijke versie van Windows Vista introduceerde. Volgens Microsoft is het gebruik van Vista volgens verwachting.

Een jaar na de introductie van de zakelijke versie van Windows Vista zijn er in Nederland ongeveer 1 miljoen licenties van het besturingssysteem verkocht. Volgens Olivier van Noort, product solution manager Business Market bij Microsoft Nederland, is dit aantal conform de verwachtingen.

Theo Rinsema, algemeen directeur Nederland, zei eerder al dat hij verwacht dat aan het einde van dit jaar vijf procent van de zakelijke markt Vista gebruikt.

Van Noort verwacht dat het gebruik van Vista in de zakelijke markt in 2008 zal verlopen volgens de cijfers van Gartner en IDC. Gartner verwacht dat 35 procent van de bedrijven Vista zal gebruiken. Volgens Van Noort worden de tools voor het maken van een inventarisatie voor de implementatie van Vista al veelvuldig gedownload.

Computerwinkels zien geen probleem met Vista

Goed om de andere kant van het verhaal ook belicht te zien ...

De brancheorganisatie van computerwinkels NLCW merkt weinig tot niets van problemen die consumenten zouden hebben met het besturingssysteem Vista van Microsoft. Secretaris Toon Klaassen reageert hiermee op een oproep van de Consumentenbond.

... De NLCW twijfelt aan het doel van de 'publiciteitsstunt' van de Consumentenbond. "Men roept de winkels op terwijl er niets aan de hand is."...

Consumentenbond opent meldpunt klachten Vista

... De consumentenbond heeft op zijn website een meldpunt opengesteld waar computergebruikers problemen kunnen rapporteren bij het gebruik van het nieuwste besturingssysteem van Microsoft, Windows Vista. Dat heeft een woordvoerder vrijdag laten weten. ...

Volgens de zegsman heeft de Consumentenbond al onderzoek gedaan naar de problemen met Vista waarmee consumenten worden geconfronteerd. ,,En dat zijn er nogal wat''.

Het systeem kampt met kinderziektes waardoor bijvoorbeeld software voor printers en andere randapparatuur niet werkt. Microsoft zegt te werken aan oplossingen, maar vertelt niet wanneer die komen, aldus de belangenorganisatie. ...

Goed iniatief. Consumenten moeten beschermd worden. Waar ik wel een probleem mee heb is dat de perceptie wordt gewekt dat er veel kinderziektes zijn en, maar de voorbeelden die in dit bericht genoemd worden gaan over printers en andere randapparatuur.

Probleem met Vista of uw randapparatuur ?

Microsoft is geen leverancier van printers en, buiten keyboards en muizen, ook geen leverancier van randapparatuur. Dit ontslaat Microsoft misschien niet 100% van haar verantwoordelijkheid, maar primair is de leverancier van de printer / randapparatuur verantwoordelijk voor het al dan niet compatible zijn / maken van haar spullen. Wat altijd vervelend blijft is dat de consument natuurlijk wel van het kastje naar de muur gestuurd wordt. Op de websites van veel leveranciers staat aangegeven welke van hun produkten werken met Windows Vista, het kan zeker de moeite lonen dit te controleren voordat je upgrade.
Microsoft biedt hiervoor de Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. Een tool dat je draait alvorens je een upgrade gaat aanschaffen. Deze wijst je op de drivers en geïnstalleerde software die geupdate moet worden om alles weer goed te laten werken.

Voordat Microsoft een produkt op de markt brengt zijn er diverse programma's waaraan leveranciers, partners en klanten kunnen deelnemen. Er zijn beta versies, Technology Adaption Programs, etc. In dit stadium kunnen leveranciers van bijvoorbeeld printers of randapparatuur en natuurlijk ook software vendors hun produkten aanpassen en geschikt maken voor deze nieuwe versie.

Als het produkt code gereed is, gaat het, 'RTM' Release To Manufacturing', en zijn de leveranciers in de gelegenheid om de drivers / software / apparatuur aan te passen aan de uiteindelijke versie.

Een goed voorbeeld is mijn eigen situatie. Ik werk met Windows Vista vanaf Beta 2, sinds Juni 2006 op mijn huidige Toshiba Portégé M400 . Dit was dus ruim 4 maanden voordat het produkt 'RTM' is gegaan. In die tijd heb ik vele malen videodrivers en andere drivers moeten aanpassen updaten, met wisseld succes, maar wel het bewijs dat met name ook Toshiba zeer veel tijd en energy in haar produkten en drivers heeft gestoken om alles op de uiteindelijke produktie datum 100% gereed te hebben.

Welke van deze 8 klachten heeft u ?

Op het meldpunt van de consumentenbond, kan de consument zijn klachten kwijt, tenminste een deel ervan. De vragenlijst is vrij sturend, je kunt / moet namelijk kiezen uit 8 problemen ... Wat als mijn probleem daar niet tussen staat ?

Vervolgens kan de gebruiker een probleem kwijt m.b.t. de verbinding met mijn internetprovider, ik begrijp niet helemaal wat dat specifiek met Windows Vista te maken heeft en kan me eerlijk gezegd, buiten Firewall instellingen weinig problemen voortstellen die specifiek iets te maken hebben met Vista. Wel vraagt men door of de internetprovider uberhaupt Windows Vista ondersteunt. Ik vraag me echt af of er providers zijn die dit (nog) niet doen en wat hier dan de reden van is ...

Als de consumentenbond nog vragen heeft bellen ze de gebruiker eventueel nog. Ik zou hen adviseren dat zowiezo te doen. Op basis van dit zeer summiere formulier lijkt het me namelijk heel moeilijk vast te stellen wat de oorzaak van het probleem is, welke mogelijkheden de gebruikers had en heeft gebruikt om tot een oplossing te komen, etc.

Wat als ik tevreden ben ?

Wat ik ook mis, is de mogelijkheid om als gebruiker aan te geven dat ik tevreden ben en geen problemen heb ondervonden met nieuwe systemen, upgrades, etc. In de afgelopen 6 maanden hebben wij thuis 2 PC's geupgrade van Windows XP Professional naar Windows Vista Ultimate en heb ik ook nog een nieuwe Windows Vista machine gekocht. De randapparatuur 2 HP printers, een Canon Scanner TFT beeldschermen en de internetverbinding werken perfect.

Natuurlijk is het in het belang van Microsoft dat alles vlekkeloos werkt en ik ben er van overtuigd dat Microsoft alles in het werk stelt om dat te realiseren, maar er zijn grenzen en situaties waar de betreffende leverancier haar verantwoordelijkheid moet nemen. Ik ben zeer benieuwd naar de uitkomst van dit onderzoek van de consumentenbond en verwacht dat Microsoft hoe dan ook gebruik zal maken van deze informatie om de dienstverlening naar consumenten verder te verbeteren ....

Computable kopt dit berichtje. Goed da dit soort informatie en rapporten er zijn, het helpt hopelijk de perceptie een beetje te veranderen :-)

... Een half jaar na de lancering blijkt Windows Vista veiliger dan de besturingssystemen Mac OS X en Linux. Vista heeft minder kritische lekken dan in de eerste zes maanden dan de andere besturingssystemen....

... De eerste zes maanden na het verschijnen van Windows XP waren er 36 problemen met het besturingssysteem. In Red Hats Linux 4 Workstation waren na zes maanden 126 ernstige lekken gevonden. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS en Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 hadden respectievelijk 29 en 23 lekken in de zes maanden na release. ...

Windows Vista Media Center : I came, I saw, ... I upgraded

In all these months of Windows Vista availability, I still had not found the time and guts to upgrade our Windows Media Center to Windows Vista.

Let me explain before you all give the answers for me :-)

1. Time
   Or rather I should say priority. It wasn't a priority as the MCE running on Windows XPSP2 workes fine for alsmost 3 years now. No flaws, no hick ups, nothing.
2. Guts
   Yes I have faith in our products, however in the 3 years, or I should say after the 1st two weeks, the MCE has grown into a must have instead of a nice to have feature.
   If for some reason an upgrade would fail or the machine would become unreliable, well that would cause an issue. This is also the reason why I chose not to participate in any dogfood programs  prior to the RTM release on this ' production' machine.

The process : insert DVD ... upgrade .... run. Flawless. No driver issues, no trouble with DVD encoders, etc, just flawless.

The upgrade most certainly is worthwhile with regards to the enhanced UI which is extremely nice in The Music interface (much better overview of catalogue) and also the TV Guide, which when in full screen plays the (recorded) TV in the background ...

We're running Windows Vista Ultimate (Dutch) and not only I am happy (this does not take much) , but the whole familiy is happy :-). Maybe it's just because the TV still works, or maybe its the new cool features in Windows Vista ... I think its the latter one :-D

Current Analysis, a US based research company released some analysis of the PC sales figures around the Windows Vista launch in the US :

... Newly released sales information for the week ending February 3, 2007, indicates that U.S. retail consumers warmly embraced Microsoft’s introduction of Vista. Vista was available pre-installed on retail PCs for the first time on January 30, 2007.

Overall unit sales for the week ending February 3, 2007, jumped 173% when compared to the previous week and increased 67% year-over-year. This sales spike is a welcome sight for retailers, given that the preceding five weeks had seen sagging sales for PCs. This slowing was primarily due to a limited amount of inventory, as retailers and OEMs chose to keep their supply of non-Vista products limited in preparation for the Vista transition. ...

... The great thing about making plans is that you dont have to actually follow them. Following the Lotusphere week, I decided the Blingmaster (My Dell XPS Gen-2 gaming laptop) had to be reinstalled. So what to do ? Redo XP (and spend four hours re-downloading all the patches) or go for Vista ? Well..

Being lazy and curious, I thought I'd give Vista a whirl. So in honour of Bill Gates' visit to Scotland (presumably to shill Vista to the Government), I've installed Vista Business...

Geheime dienst beveiligt Windows Vista

Poll: 20 Percent Will Move to Vista in the Next Year

This certainly won't be the last poll on this topic...

... Eighty-six percent of IT decision makers say they plan to adopt Windows Vista, and 20 percent say they will move to the new operating system within the next year, according to a new tracking poll sponsored by CDW Corp.

Other results from the survey of 761 IT decision makers show that 51 percent say at least half of their existing hardware will need to be upgraded or replaced in order to run Vista. Still, only 14 percent say they are postponing hardware purchases or IT decisions in anticipation of Vista’s release. ...

... Overall, 75 percent of respondents cited improved security as a key benefit of Vista, while 63 percent cited improved performance. Of those who have been beta testing Vista, nine percent said they have formed a somewhat or very unfavorable opinion, while 70 percent formed somewhat or very favorable impressions of the system. ...

Forrester: A Forecast Of Windows Vista Consumer Adoption

Athough the figures below by Forrester are alltogether impressive I dare to say that 'results in the past are no guarantee for the future'. Windows is the foundation of more different formfactors today, just think about the Media Center. So Windows XP's adaption history is only part of the story.

In the US consumer market, the best predictor of Windows Vista uptake is Windows XP's adoption history. Forrester's historical tracking of the installed base of computers — since 1998 — gives us a view into how Windows Vista will progress. Of course, creative marketing can accelerate the pace of adoption in the near term, but over the product's lifetime, consumers' entrenched behavior will determine Vista's growth, from 12 million households in 2007 to 73 million households by 2011.

Running Office 2007 Enterprise RTM and Windows Vista Ultimate RTM

I upgraded my machine this weekend to the latest RTM releases of Office and Vista this weekend.

To be honoust, the backup and restore of my data took longer than the whole format / install alltogether. As I was running release candidate versions allready, there is not much / no difference functionality wise. As far as stability goes I didn't have much problems anyway.

I've been running Office 2007 since beginning of this year and started using Windows Vista when I received my new Tablet PC, the Toshiba M250, in June. I immediately got hooked on both products because of the new functionality and ease of use. Simple things such as the integrated search functionality in Vista and the authoring and graphocal functions in Office are just awesome. As far as the learnongcurve is considered; a walk in the parc for anyone who is used to using a PC with industry standard software ...

I will be upgrading my Windows Media Center next weekend to t Windows Vista Ultimate (Dutch). I just need to check some drivers and upgrade my graphics adapter.

Aspects often forgotten in the heat of "cool stuff", Sucurity, stabolity, etc. How can people with disabilities, older people. Last year we had a speaker on one of our company meetings in The Netherlands who is blind. He explained how important it is people who design websites and software in general take a "disability angle" in their design and build.

In one of my posts back in August of this year, I quoted the decision of Massachusetts to not go with Open Office or some other stripped down version of Office for this type of functionality:

After Microsoft Office 2007 earlier this week, now also Windows Vista hits the big milestone. I'll be updating my machine this weekend ...;-)

You’ve probably heard more than enough about “glass” as one of the features in Windows Vista.

The display driver was in fact the only update I needed to do on my machine to allow this feature to work. And it looks pretty cool :- )

This will be a very nice weekend : New Tablet, Windows Vista, Office 2007 ...

The IT dept emailed me this morning that my new Toshiba Portege M400 Tablet PC has arrived and if I would like to pick it up ..."hmmm let me think about it" ... "YES !"

I've been waiting for the new machine to start working with a totally new configuartion :

The new Tablet + Windows Vista Beta2 + Office 2007 Professional Beta2.

We call this process dogfooding (which we get to do all the time :-) ) and although there may be bumps in the road I am very confident the new setup will bring far more benefits than downside.

After working with Office 2007 Beta's for quite some time I am very impressed by the Beta2 version which I use in production now since the internal release ..owsome ...

Windows Vista will be new to be honoust so much of the weekend will be spend on that learningcurve (if the family will allow me ...

No matter how sceptical you might be about Microsoft software (part of my blogvisitors are ;-) ) if you have some IT spirit in you, you may be able to understand the excitement.

From now on you can expect a "field trip" report frequently ...

Windows Vista Collaboration

It's a nice new way of looking at ad-hoc collaboration when there's no corporate server / service around; it beats the memory stick being past around :-)

... Windows Vista, which just formally entered its beta 2 cycle, offers a whole host of new networking features, notably significantly better security, better deployment tools, superior mobility, built-in support for IPv6, and much-improved desktop management and troubleshooting help.

But lost in all the buzz about these new features are some excellent new collaboration tools --- although it appears that Microsoft has decided that when it comes to collaboration, Windows will be an island rather than a bridge.

Taken by itself, Windows Collaboration (also to be called Windows Meeting Space) Vista's collaboration tool, should prove to be quite useful for those who want to use live collaboration and virtual meetings. It allows for collaboration across a network, and via ad hoc peer-to-peer Wi-Fi networking when no network is present.

Across a network, meetings can be set up several different ways. An email invitation can be sent out; when the recipient accepts the invitation, he is sent into Windows Collaboration. The owner of the meeting posts a file or presentation or launches an application, copies of which are copied to the PCs of each meeting participant. He can give the presentation by himself, or turn over the presentation to someone else, who can then add, delete or edit information, which in turn is shared with everyone else in the meeting.

At the end of the meeting, a final document is saved to the PC or everyone in the meeting. ...

Onderstaand berichtje zag ik de afgelopen dagen opduiken op diverse sites ..

Windows Vista zal volgens onderzoeksbureau Gartner pas in het tweede kwartaal van komend jaar algemeen beschikbaar zijn. Microsoft zegt dat de nieuwe Windows-versie in november beschikbaar is voor bedrijven en in januari voor consumenten. [Via Computable ICT-nieuws]

Engeland wil toegang tot Windows Vista

?? Ik weet niet exact wat "Engeland" hiermee bedoeld, maar dit lijkt me nogal een lastige discussie. Ik heb voldoende spannende films gezien om te begrijpen wie het waarvoor kan gebruiken, maar misbruik is heel moeilijk vast te stellen lijkt me.

Volgens de BBC zijn vertegenwoordigers van de Britse regering in gesprek met Microsoft om via een geheime "achterdeur" toegang te krijgen tot Windows Vista. De Britse regering wil de mogelijkheid hebben om data te achterhalen op computers waarop het nieuwe besturingssysteem is geinstalleerd.

Apparently, Microsoft has closed the customer-developer feedback loop
for improved programmer productivity. (Pay close attention; there are several Tecra M4's in the video). Too bad WE-SYP was not active back in August.



I'm surprised Michael hasn't already blogged about this. I'm not worried, though. I'm sure he will find a way to sneak another jab in when I least expect it.
