The BBC has a aired a short impression of the Microsoft Home of the future which is located at the campus in Redmond. I’ve been there myself a couple of times and its very cool.

AG: Thuisservers nemen hoge vlucht

Timing is alles zeggen ze wel is. Ik heb juist afgelopen dinsdag een vurig betoog gehouden op Lifehackingacademy Groningen voor de ‘thuisserver’ van Microsoft en alle mogelijkheden die deze biedt.

Thuisservers voor het centraal opslaan van muziek, foto’s, films en documenten zullen over enkele jaren een hoge vlucht nemen. Van een niche-product, geleverd door de pc-industrie, worden deze ‘home servers’ een gangbaar stuk consumentenelektronica.

DiNovo: mooi Windows Mediacenter keyboard

Ik zag vandaag een leuke uitbreiding voor mijn Vista mediacenter in het tijdschrift Pc Consument: de Logitech DiNovo. Een superklein keyboard / afstandsbediening met bluetooth. Hij is nog wel prijzig, de adviesprijs is 149,99 en via de prijzensites kwam ik 129,90 tegen als goedkoopste prijs op dit moment.

HomeServer - Backups in progress

"Filling" the HomeServer this weekend. I've backed up all the home PC's and the MediaCenter already.

I also offloaded some of the content on my Tablet PC such as PPT's and Videos.

I've still got "some" storage left :-)

HomeServer installation

Yesterday my HomeServer kit finally arrived (order was waiting for the systemboard). The housing is somewhat bigger than I anticipated, but on the other hand it can store up to 11 disks ...

Installation of the software is just a breeze ...

Today I will 'centralise' the media content and move the majority of files off of our MediaCenter.

Also I will set up 'all' of the Home PC's up so that automatic backups will be made.

During the weekend I will dive into the remote access scenario's.

So ... enough to play with :-)

Concert The Police - 14/9/2007

Jeugdsentiment ... gisteren naar het concert van 'The Police' geweest met 2 vrienden (ook oudere jongeren :-) ).

Toen het nog licht was heb ik even een foto gemaakt vanuit de "bar" :

Nog even een impressie die ik op YouTube vond vanochtend (het geluid ter plaatse was iets beter :-)

Het concert was in 1 woord super ! Alle hits kwamen langs , maar elk met mooie improvisaties ... Ik had dit niet willen missen ...

Ik ben mij aan het orienteren op een nieuwe fotocamera. Een van mijn vraagbaken is collega Joris. Hij is een zeer fanatiek fotograaf en Cannon gebruiker. Mede gezien zijn ervaringen en mijn eigen "research" neig ik ook naar een Canon camera (binnenkort meer, stay tuned). Zeker nu blijkt dat Canon gebruikers nog minder egoistisch zijn ook :-) ...

... Fotografen die gebruik maken van een Canon camera delen vaker hun foto's dan fotografen die een camera van een ander merk bezitten. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van de online fotodienst MijnAlbum.nl. ...

Microsoft HomeServer is RTM

The Microsoft HomeServer team released the product to manufacturing. If you want to know more about HomeServer check the homepage.

... Woo-hoo!  We did it. Today we are announcing that Windows Home Server has been released to manufacturing (RTM). We have finalized the software and now handing it off to our OEM partners. The evaluation version (with 120 day evaluation period) and the system builder version are also heading into the distribution channels and will be available in the next couple of months. French, German and Spanish versions will be finalized shortly, and OEM products will hit retail shelves this fall.

We're also excited to announce Iomega and Fujitsu-Siemens Computers (FSC) as new OEMs planning to ship Windows Home Server products later this year. ...

I have not participated in the beta's for this product. Simply because of lack of time. I am certainly part of the 'target audience' for this product as the content we have and generate at home is exploding :

• All music is digital (700+ CD's)
• All pictures are up on the mediacenter
• recorded TV programs / movies are up on the mediacenter as well. Currently we have a 'backlog' of some 10+ movies and series to view and a number of movies / documentaries that I would like to save.
• 5 PCs at home that need to be backupped regularly

HomeServer will allow me and the rest of the family to centralise a number of important things such as backup and storage. We will just put a HomeServer with 1+ TB in the basement :-)

Windows Vista Media Center : I came, I saw, ... I upgraded

In all these months of Windows Vista availability, I still had not found the time and guts to upgrade our Windows Media Center to Windows Vista.

Let me explain before you all give the answers for me :-)

1. Time
   Or rather I should say priority. It wasn't a priority as the MCE running on Windows XPSP2 workes fine for alsmost 3 years now. No flaws, no hick ups, nothing.
2. Guts
   Yes I have faith in our products, however in the 3 years, or I should say after the 1st two weeks, the MCE has grown into a must have instead of a nice to have feature.
   If for some reason an upgrade would fail or the machine would become unreliable, well that would cause an issue. This is also the reason why I chose not to participate in any dogfood programs  prior to the RTM release on this ' production' machine.

The process : insert DVD ... upgrade .... run. Flawless. No driver issues, no trouble with DVD encoders, etc, just flawless.

The upgrade most certainly is worthwhile with regards to the enhanced UI which is extremely nice in The Music interface (much better overview of catalogue) and also the TV Guide, which when in full screen plays the (recorded) TV in the background ...

We're running Windows Vista Ultimate (Dutch) and not only I am happy (this does not take much) , but the whole familiy is happy :-). Maybe it's just because the TV still works, or maybe its the new cool features in Windows Vista ... I think its the latter one :-D

The second "gadget investment" I did is a Zune . The brown version ....

One of my colleagues brought me one back from Redmond last Thursday (thanks Rene ;-) ). As I already have a Creative Portable Media Center (PMC), this will now soon be on marktplaats.

Compared to the PMC, the Zune on has 1 disadvantage so far, it does not automatically converts Media Center Recorded TV when syncing. There is ofcourse plenty 3rd party software available to convert these files to WMV format. Reason I use this, is to catch up with recorded TV while I am travelling and so avoid the B-movies on the plane ...

The advantages over the PMC are : size (no .. it's smaller whereas the screensize is almost the same); 30GB HD vs 20GB HD; (more to follow as I gain experience with it).

Installing the Zune software on Vista gave some challenges as this is not yet supported (will be once Vista is launched for consumers). I installed the internal dogfoodbuild which works superb .... Linked the Zune Music Library to my MediaCenter and ... was able to sync all without a hassle.

Not that Nespresso is bad coffee, the machine served us well for a couple of years. But a few weeks ago I had a couple of capuchinos at a colleague's house and that was something totally different ...

We had some simple wishes. A good machine with an(semi) automatic capuchino option. Jura F70 came out best .. design, ease of use, the capuchino option ...

MySpace.com gaat tv-serie 24 verkopen

Ik heb vandaag even gekeken, best gaaf. ze hebben seizoen 1 en 5 op dit moment. Seizoen 5 is nog niet in NL uitgezonden.
Je kunt ook de het ghele seizoen downloaden voor $47,50, is wel 350 Mb per aflevering :-)

De online profielsite MySpace.com gaat video verkopen. Vanaf volgende week kunnen gebruikers losse afleveringen van de populaire tv-serie 24 aanschaffen voor 1,99 dollar per aflevering.

'Amazon komt snel met filmdownloads'

Gave ontwikkeling; op deze manier komt de concurrentie voor bedrijven als Videoland uit een toch wat onverwachte hoek. Hoe meer competitie hoe beter voor ons als consument ;-)

Internetwarenhuis Amazon is in gesprek met Hollywood om films en televisieseries te leveren. De downloaddienst zou gekoppeld worden aan de Internet Movie Database.

Mijn nieuwe speeltje is binnen : Het Microsoft Media Center Edition Keyboard

Dit is echt de slagroom op de taart :-).

Het keyboard werkt perfect en ziet er ook super uit. De muis is nog wat wennen, maar al met al is het een wereld van verschil met mijn (inmiddels) oude keyboard van BTC. Op zich ook een goed keyboard, maar ja die gaat vandaag op marktplaats ...

De foto is verre van optimaal, dat heb je als je een slechte fotograag en een slechte camera combineert :-) Ik hoop dat op zijn minst duidelijk is dat de bovenste mooier is dan de onderste ...

YORIN FM: KANE IN CONCERT!

Ik ben gisteren met Laura naar het concert van Kane geweest. Echt super ! Zo'n 32.000 man op het Almere strand (en het was droog). Het voorprogramma, de band Relax viel een beetje tegen wat mij betreft.
Alles was tot in de puntjes geregeld; niet alleen het concert zelf natuurlijk, maar ook alle logistiek er omheen.

Nieuwe koelkast

Het moest er toch een keer van komen ... al jaren worstelen we met koelkastruimte en 2 koelkasten en een vrieskist. Echt behelpen dus.

Vandaag hebben we de knoop doorgehakt en een leuk nieuw koelkastje besteld ...

Dordt in Stoom 15+16 mei 2004

Vandaag ga ik, zoals elke 2 jaar, met mijn dochter naar Dordt in stoom. Ik ben niet zo'n evenementen fan, maar dit is toch wel leuk. Waanzinnig veel mensen op de been en je ziet nog eens wat van je eigen stad. Dordt in Stoom 15+16 mei 2004

Uitje: Hans Liberg

Vanavond gaan we naar de show van Hans Liberg. Dit zijn onze laatste theater tickets voor dit seizoen. Deze week de informatie en inschrijflijsten voor het Theaterseizoen 2004/2005 binnengekregen... super leuke dingen. Alle inschrijvingen gaan tegenwoordig via loting, dus inschrijven en duimen maar.
