Goodbyeves #hyves

Goodbye Hyves.

The reach and impact of LinkedIn

LinkedIN is such a normal ‘tool’ in my day to day proces for connecting with new people and maintaining current and old relationships, that I sometimes overlook how powerful it really is.

Get The Most Value From Social Computing For Business

New whitepaper by Microsoft on the benefits of Social Computing for Enterprises :

The whitepaper discusses the value of social computing for business, citing 2 customer references of large scale enterprise deployments, and the technologies that enable successful results from social computing.

The whitepaper also addresses the business and technical benefits from using SharePoint Products and Technologies and how the platform differentiates compared to other social computing vendors.

Social computing is not a passing trend, so organizations should think of this “new way of work” in context of a broader enterprise collaboration strategy.

Beyond Office 2010 - The Future of Productivity

Office 2010 is here. The most complete but also the most evolved version of the Office productivity suite. For many years the Office suite is no longer just about personal productity; it is about managing information in the broadest context posiible : interaction between individuals, teams and organisations, from an ad-hoc, project or any kind of social context.

Microsoft’s vision goes far beyond Office 2010 and for those who have not seen this vision yet, take a look at this video :

Now there's also a whitepaper available which puts a number of innovations / visions shown in the video into perspective :

… This paper illustrates how productivity software has evolved to make your work life easier and more productive, and explores some areas where Microsoft is using new technologies and approaches to drive even greater improvements in productivity and efficiency throughout your organization. …

Samen-Werken 2.9 – Microsoft presentatie

Slideshare shows what Twitter means for customer Service ?

Very very good customer service … instantly.

I make a lot of use of Slideshare. So when something does not work according to my expectation I am not happy. Today I tried to upload a presentation and although the presentation has 30 slides iSLideshare only publshed the first eleven slides. What to do ?

1. Say you’re unhappy on Twitter

clip_image001

2. Within 30 minutes I got a response from a Slideshare representative

clip_image001[6]

3. We exchanged emails and my problem is solved within 1 hour after I reported it (1 slide with may logos gave issues)

4. I thanked Slideshare :-)

Yammer goes from SaaS to Software + Services

Yammer also sees the benefits / needs of a Software + Services strategy. Some organisations prefer or maybe even require an onpremise solution …

Yammer Goes Beyond Saas, Offers Self-Hosted Version

Enterprise microblogging software service provider Yammer has announced a version of their software that can be run on a company's servers, inside the corporate firewall.

The Twitter-like service intended for the workplace has had great success with the hosted version of their software and is trying to take the next step in facilitating conversations in companies and workgroups. …

… Why Go Internal?

Why would Yammer release a self-hosted version? For many reasons, but primarily because many enterprises maintain IS security policies that all corporate communications are held on corporate servers. While using Yammer in a traditional manner, users store microblogging messages on Yammer's servers. Under this arrangement, potentially sensitive and confident information might seep out into just anyone's hands, causing unease in the information security fields  ….

Event : USE YOUR CREATIVE NETWORK BRAIN !

Hoe passen we onze creativiteit toe? Hoe verkopen we onze ontwerpen?

Kunst is continu nieuwe werken maken. Dus de eerste klik is er al!
Datum: Vrijdag 6 februari 2009
Tijd: 13:30 uur tot 17:00 uur

The SlideShare Ribbon for PowerPoint

I am big fan of Slideshare and also of Office 2007. It is great to see these two come together. I’ve been using the add-in for a couple of weeks now. This is what Microsoft Office is all about … it not just a suite with Word, Excel PowerPoint , it is a platform that allows people to build intergration with other solutions and services :

The SlideShare Ribbon for PowerPoint

The SlideShare Ribbon for PowerPoint 2007 lets you use most features of SlideShare from within PowerPoint. You can download and upload files, search, view usage metrics for presentations, and lots more.

Linkedin + Slideshare

Recently Linkedin has added integration with several external applications of which SlideShare.net is one.

So I now also intergated Linkedin and Slideshare.net. Linkedin then resets the #views and the #downloads probably so you can see which entry has more traffic.

Gartner: Magic Quadrant for Social Software

Microsoft certainly sticks out in this Gartner Analysis.

As one my main focus area these days is on Software + Services I really am pleased with the quote on Google :

The SaaS-only model will limit the appeal for some organizations.

It confirms that although SaaS is an attractive business model with huge potential there are advantages in having multiple delivery options such as on-premise and hosting …

Gartner MQ Social Software 10-2008

Microsoft: Strengths

  • With SharePoint, Microsoft offers a broad set of capabilities that combine structured collaboration with core social computing capabilities, including blogs, wikis, podcasting, persistent group chat, discussion groups, "people search" that uses social network analysis, and related rich content, portal and workflow capabilities on a platform that offers consistent management and administration.
  • Microsoft has continued to see exceptional market penetration, momentum, sizable internal and external deployments, and satisfaction with Windows SharePoint Services (a component included in Windows server at no extra charge) and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) during 2008.
  • It offers integration with desktop office applications and related offerings such as Microsoft's productivity tools, leading e-mail server, unified communications suite, Web-based meetings and Live Services.
  • It has a very strong technology partner network ready to exploit SharePoint's presence in business environments while adding value and filling functionality gaps.
  • The possibility now exists for better support for social analytics (sentiment and intent analysis) through integration with the recently acquired Fast Search & Transfer.
  • Microsoft's market presence as a dependable global vendor enables it to handle enterprise requirements.

Microsoft : Cautions

  • Given its breadth, MOSS may deter those who are looking to take advantage only of the collaboration and social networking capabilities, and those not fully committed to Microsoft infrastructure services.
  • There are functional gaps including social tagging and bookmarking, social search and an improved wiki (although some of these are offered by Microsoft as open-source components through its Codeplex community).
  • This strong partner network is a "double edged sword" as SharePoint may require a multivendor ecosystem to fulfill the needs of an organization with sophisticated social software needs.
  • SharePoint's rich functionality can be hard to pull together into user-friendly environments without some technical assistance.
  • More flexible deployment options are offered through the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) SaaS program, but its credibility will take time to establish.

Think outside the (geo)box!

Forrester: The Mashup Opportunity

Mashup becoming a megatrend according to Forrester ...

Mashups — custom applications that combine multiple, disparate data sources into something new and unique — are coming to the enterprise. Forrester projects that the enterprise mashup market will reach nearly $700 million by 2013; while this means that there is plenty of money to be made selling mashup platforms, it will affect nearly every software vendor. Mashup platforms are in the pole position and ready to grab the lion's share of the market — and an entire ecosystem of mashup technology and data providers is emerging to complement those platforms. Those vendor strategists that move quickly, plan a mashup strategy, and build a partner ecosystem will come out on top.

Mike Gotta: The New Out-Of-Office Message

Mike posted something interesting about the evolution of the 'Out-Of-Office' Message or OOF as we call it at Microsoft. Email meets Twitter so to say.

I was e-mailing a vendor contact as part of a document review process and received this "out of office" message. I think it's perfect. I've cleaned it up a bit below but I think this is a sign of things to come - don't push away, simply redirect:

I'm at the <insert name of event or business trip> between <dates> and will have delayed access to e-mail. If you have an extremely urgent issue, then call me directly at <cell phone info>.

If you want to keep track of me, then follow me via Twitter at http://twitter.com/<name> or via FriendFeed at http://friendfeed.com/<name>.

Out-of-office replaced by shared situational awareness.

Source: The New Out-Of-Office Message: Twitter and FriendFeed

I really see this as a good example on how 'Web 2.0' and 'Enterprise 2.0' go hand in hand. Surely not every organisation will approve of the use of for example Twitter and not every employee 'Tweets'.

It's solutions like Twitter that lay the foundation of a new breed of social and contextual awareness solutions that we will integrate in our Enterprise platforms ...

In doubt ... Naymz

image

I'm getting about 3 or 4 a day of these invites. No doubt this is another result of social networks crossing over just like Plaxo Pulse and others.

Reputation Network ?

Naymz created Reputation Networking to help verify your reputation and connect with other reputable professionals. Your Reputation Network is comprised of people that you invite and those that invite you. Anyone in your Reputation Network is able to give an opinion about your reputation, agree to act as a reference, and/or leave an endorsement on your profile. You have the ability to do the same for them. Your RepScore is ultimately determined by the reputations of those in your Reputation Network and what they think of you.

You may remove someone from your Reputation Network at any time for any reason.

Fiilling out as much as possible about yourself gives you a 'Repscore' ..

I haven't figured out why I should include Naymz in my toolkit .. have you ?

CIO's fear consumer technologies

Every year CIO.com has a survey amongs CIO's about the usage and uptake of consumer technologies:
... Even if most CIOs and IT managers were to acknowledge that major technology innovations occur in the consumer space first before they carry over into the enterprise, that doesn’t mean they have to like it. It also doesn’t mean the explosion of devices, smart phones, Web-based applications and social networks doesn’t keep them up at night worrying about enterprise security. In the Nine Consumer Technologies CIOs Fear, we profiled which technologies IT executives find the most troublesome from a security perspective. ...

Microsoft SearchTogether : Social / Collaborative Search

Cool new development from Microsoft Research : MicrosoftTogether.

... Today, Web search is a solitary experience. Web browsers and search engine sites are typically designed to support a single user, working alone. However, collaboration on information-seeking tasks is actually quite commonplace! For example, students work together to complete homework assignments, friends seek information about entertainment opportunities, family members jointly plan vacation travel, and colleagues jointly conduct research for their projects. My research on collaborative search is aimed at facilitating small-group collaboration on search tasks; this webpage contains links to my papers and videos on collaborative search. ...

Introducing Forrester's Web 2.0 Framework

Forrester's Erica Driver introduces a framework around Web 2.0. Somehow all these models look alike ...

... One of my roles here at Forrester for the past year or so has been chief Web 2.0 cat herder. I'm by no means a Web 2.0 expert -- I've just helped to coordinate our coverage. A large team of analysts has put our heads together to try to create a well-rounded Web 2.0 research agenda and formulate a consistent way to conceptualize and communicate about this giant hairball of a topic. We hope you're seeing the results in our published research. Below is one result of our team meetings: a high-level Web 2.0 framework.

Forrester: How To Staff For Social Computing

Interesting point of view by Forrester: Social Computing requires specialist resources. I don't necessarily agree. Look at how far millions of users have come on their own with Web 2.0 solutions out there like Linked-In, MySPace, Facebook, Hyves, etc. etc.

These types of solutions is exactly what users want and need within their organisation as well. Anyone or anything making the introduction / adoption of these tools more complicated, let alone someone who defines policies and rules will limit the adoption. I think we've 'been there done that' with Knowledge Management ...

Don't try to build and run social applications without the right staff. We've identified two key new roles needed for success: 1) the Social Computing strategist, who'll lead the internal charge, and 2) the community manager, an external customer advocate. Working in tandem, these roles will align Social Computing programs with the business and ensure that community members are happy. Management should agree upon goals and then give the team latitude to get the job done —including embracing mistakes as new programs are tested out.

Forrester on Enterprise Software adoption and Enterprise 2.0 ..

2 reports by Forrester (you need a subscription).

On Web 2.0 in the Enterprise : "... The market will remain volatile, but Forrester expects midtier software vendors, consultancies and systems integrators, and Microsoft to reap the biggest rewards in the coming year."

The State Of Enterprise Software Adoption: 2007 To 2008

How are enterprises adopting, using, and managing all types of software, including enterprise applications, Web 2.0, open source, software-as-a-service (SaaS), and service-oriented architecture (SOA) — and what do they plan to do with IT budgets in the next 12 months? This document gives highlights of an extensive data set collected from 1,017 IT decision-makers across North American and European enterprises via our Business Data Services Enterprise And SMB Software Survey, North America And Europe, Q3 2007. What's hot? Enterprise resource planning (ERP) upgrades, SOA, and Web 2.0.

Top Enterprise Web 2.0 Predictions For 2008

The enterprise Web 2.0 market, which includes the deployment of tools like blogs, wikis, and social networking within the enterprise, was a growing force in enterprise software in 2007. While the market is still quite immature, it will continue to gain importance in 2008 as an increasing number of firms look to enterprise Web 2.0 tools to solve long-standing information worker problems. As a result, Forrester expects to see strong demand growth for tools like enterprise RSS and social networking, an increased role for IT departments in technology acquisition, and steadily growing revenue from current deployments. The market will remain volatile, but Forrester expects midtier software vendors, consultancies and systems integrators, and Microsoft to reap the biggest rewards in the coming year.

2007 Analyst Reports on or including Microsoft Products and solutions

The Microsoft Analyst Relations page features lot's of reports for which Microsoft has obtained the reprint or distribution rights. I have made a selection of the 2007 reports on topics that mean something in 'my world' :

Below is a collection of reports published by leading independent analyst firms on, or including, Microsoft. Microsoft has secured all copyright and publishing privileges with the firms to include the reports on this site for all audiences. All reports were researched and funded by the analyst firms themselves.

(some links may expire over time)

Enterprise Search

  • Microsoft: The Latest Disruptor in Enterprise Search (Forrester Research, Nov. 6, 2007, .pdf, 104K) This Forrester report examines Microsoft’s expanded enterprise search offerings. Analyst Ken Poore writes “Microsoft Search Server 2008 raises the bar and frees up search. This week, Microsoft made its latest move into the enterprise search platforms market with two strategic products: Microsoft Search Server Express 2008 and Microsoft Search Server 2008. These products deliver a solid set of features that reset the feature/price/ease-of-use equation for entry-level and midtier enterprise search.”
  • Microsoft Drives a Wedge Between High and Low-End Enterprise Search (Forrester Research, Sept. 28, 2007, .pdf, 121 kb) This Forrester report examines Microsoft’s position into the enterprise search market. Analyst Matthew Brown writes “Microsoft offers significantly improved search capabilities in MOSS 2007 and its standalone search product, MOSS 2007 for Search. And Microsoft isn't just throwing products into the market. Instead, it has mobilized the entire organization behind search, including extensive marketing and events, partner training programs, and specific global sales goals.”
  • Magic Quadrant for Information Access Technology, 2007 (Gartner, September 5, 2007): This Gartner Magic Quadrant by Whit Andrews evaluates leading vendors in the Information Access market which extends beyond enterprise search to encompass a collection of information access technologies. Gartner positions Microsoft in the Challengers quadrant. According to Gartner, “Challengers possess sufficient resources to effectively penetrate the information access technology market.”
  • How Secure Should Your Search Be? (Forrester Research, Inc., April 12, 2007, .pdf, 128 kb) This Forrester report examines enterprise search security as a complex issue that requires careful weighing of requirements to achieve “winning search strategies that will balance costs with advanced functionality.” For example, organizations should consider whether search will span more than one secure repository and if the answer is ‘yes’, analyst Matt Brown writes companies should evaluate “higher-end products including those from infrastructure providers such as Microsoft.”

Messaging and Workflow

  • Messaging, Workflow Roadmap Announced (Directions on Microsoft, Oct. 30, 2007, .pdf, 377 kb) “Oslo supports principles – service-oriented architecture and composite applications – that Microsoft believes will drive future business application development.”

SaaS / Enterprise 2.0 / Consumerisation

  • Evaluating IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP Web and Consumerization Strategies (Gartner Research, Oct. 3, 2007) This vendor evaluation looks at Consumerization and the Web as two related and highly impactful issues facing users and vendors today. Analysts David Mitchell Smith and Charles Abrams state that “one major force behind the consumerization of IT is the Internet and enterprises' adoption of Internet technologies.”
  • Rich Internet Apps Move Beyond The Browser (Forrester Research, June 27, 2007) This Forrester report examines the adoption of rich internet applications (RIAs). The independent report finds that while early RIAs were exclusively browser-based, new platforms from Microsoft [and other vendors] broaden developer options for delivering rich media and content to clients. Forrester writes that “Microsoft has a tactical edge because its dominant position at the desktop with the .NET Framework will attract large numbers of developers who already target Microsoft’s desktop and browser platforms.”

Enterprise Content Management

  • Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management, 2007 (Gartner, September 21, 2007): This Gartner Magic Quadrant by Karen Shegda evaluates leading vendors in the Enterprise Content Management market which includes web content management, records management, document imaging, document management, workflow and document-centric collaboration. Gartner positions Microsoft in the Visionaries quadrant.

Unified Communications

  • Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications, 2007 (Gartner, August 20, 2007): This Gartner Magic Quadrant by Bern Elliot evaluates leading vendors in the unified communications market. Gartner positions Microsoft in the Leaders quadrant. According to Gartner, “The Leaders quadrant contains vendors selling comprehensive and integrated UC solutions that directly, or with well-defined partnerships, address the full range of market needs.”
  • Microsoft Communicator Overhangs the Enterprise Communications Market (Gartner, Inc., May 1, 2007) In this Gartner report, analyst Geoff Johnson discusses Microsoft’s upcoming launch of Office Communications Server 2007. He states that “reliable integration of communications into enterprise platforms is a necessary precursor to the eventual development of communications-enabled business processes.”

Customer Relationship Management

  • Microsoft Leads in Record-Centric Customer Service Management Software: The Forrester Wave™ Vendor Summary, Q2 2007 (Forrester Research, May 24, 2007, .pdf, 199 kb) “Microsoft Dynamics CRM, which delivers sufficient customer service capabilitie at a low cost, has emerged as a leader among customer record-centric products. Although not as functionally rich in core customer service capabilities, Microsoft compensates through its architecture, integration, usability, and business strategy. The product shines in its ability to support agents through phone agent, blended agent, and agent collaboration tools — all of which sit on top of a solid workflow engine. In the future, look for Microsoft to exploit its Customer Care Framework, a modular XML Web Services architecture for rapid development and deployment of contact center solutions.”
  • Magic Quadrant for CRM Customer Service Contact Centers, (Gartner, March 6, 2007): This Gartner Magic Quadrant by Michael Maoz evaluates leading CRM vendors in the customer service contact centers space and positions Microsoft Dynamics CRM in the Visionary quadrant. • The Forrester Wave™: Midmarket CRM Suites, Q1 2007 (Forrester, February 21, 2007, .pdf , 513 kb): “The Microsoft brand gives Dynamics CRM major momentum. Microsoft Dynamics CRM is one of the newer products included in our evaluation, but the vendor has made impressive progress building out its solution, which emerged as a Leader for the first time in a Forrester Wave.”
  • The Forrester Wave™: Enterprise CRM Suites, Q1 2007 (Forrester Research, Feb. 5, 2007, .pdf, 488 kb) Microsoft Dynamics CRM was rated a Strong Performer in this Forrester Wave. Forrester applied two sets of criteria weightings to this analysis, one appropriate for large enterprise wide deployments and another focused on midmarket priorities - the two sets of criteria were then used to evaluate and position the solutions.

Burton Group: Enterprise 2.0 Report: Table of Contents

Judging on the TOC, Mike Gotta of Burton Group finished an impressive report on Enterprise 2.0. I've put it on my readinglist ...

... A few people asked for an executive summary of the report published recently on Enterprise 2.0 (availability of the report for Burton Group clients was posted here). I included the summary to the report (which basically is the executive summary, or synopsis as we call it) in that posting. Unfortunately, that's all I can share in terms of large excerpts from the document and I don't have time to write a separate summary at the moment. You can gleam aspects of the report from my blog postings and I have included the table of contents below to help non-clients gain a better understanding of what the document covers: ...

Forrester: The Seven Tenets Of The Information Workplace

Forrester described the ways the 'Information Workplace' is influenced by Web 2.0 ... (and RIA's ofcource ;-) )

When Forrester first described the Information Workplace in 2005, we positioned it as the next-generation platform that delivered collaboration, content, portals and office productivity — plus a plethora of new capabilities bursting on the scene, such as unified communications and expertise location. But the Information Workplace (IW) has never been about the piece parts. Instead, what makes the Information Workplace transformational is how the piece parts are built into a seamless whole that supports people in the way they want to work. Specifically, we described the IW as role-based, contextual, seamless, visual, and multimodal. Now — fast-forward to late 2007 —enterprise Web 2.0 is rapidly advancing, bringing even greater "Design for People" concepts into the IW. For example, through the power of social networking and mashups, which allow people to have it their way, the IW can go beyond role-based to even become individualized. With enterprise Web 2.0, the IW also gains two new facets: "social" and "quick." With all these characteristics, the IW will better support a "Design for People" world and allow people to work in a much more natural way.

Irwin Lazar: Building the SharePoint Ecosystem

Irwin Lazar posted a very positive view on MOSS 2007 on Collaboration Loop. The core attributes Microsoft addresses : platform and ecosystem ... I couldn't agree more:

... Over the past few months I’ve struggled to get my arms around Microsoft Office SharePoint, Microsoft’s “über” platform for asynchronous collaboration.

Is SharePoint a Web 2.0 platform? Is SharePoint a content management system? Is SharePoint a workflow manager? Is SharePoint a social computing platform? Or is SharePoint a portal to other applications?

Well…the answer to all of these questions is a conditional “yes.” SharePoint does have the capabilities to function in all these roles. SharePoint supports Web 2.0 capabilities such as blogs and wikis, as well as user customizable data to enable searches based on meta tags. ...

... As enterprises create their SharePoint strategy it makes sense to look beyond the core capabilities of SharePoint when those capabilities don’t meet your needs. Microsoft’s ecosystem for bringing best-of-breed services into the SharePoint ecosystem continues to grow, meaning that rather than viewing SharePoint as the be-all-end-all of enterprise collaboration, it is instead wiser to view SharePoint as the platform that can support both internal capabilities as well as leverage external best-of-breed products to fully meet enterprise requirements. ...

Forrester: Social Computing Moves Into Recruitment

Not very surprising conclusions, yet a very good and pragmatic way to leverage "web 2.0" technology for business

... Human capital management (HCM) professionals are faced with a shrinking labor pool, lower unemployment rates, vacant jobs orders that require increasingly specialized and sought-after skills, and an environment where traditional recruiting processes and systems fail to align with many job seekers' use of technology. To combat these challenges, strategic recruiters are finding alternatives to turbo-charge their traditional recruiting programs — and one alternative is Social Computing. Younger workers — and to an increasing degree older ones, too — are embracing Social Computing as a way to consume information and build relationships. Firms must deliberately weave many aspects of Social Computing into their traditional recruiting programs to find — and ultimately hire — the best talent possible.  ...

Enabling and managing social networks (for business use) with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

Very comprehensive overview about MOSS 2007 in relation to social networking.

While the competition is playing Microsoft down by spreading incomplete information on our social networking capabilities (slide 25,26) (more on this in a couple of days), but the most recent Gartner MQ on Magic Quadrant for Team Collaboration and Social Software sets the scene: Microsoft furthest ahead.

Lawrence and his team do a great job in explaining Microsoft's capability in social networking. be sure to read the whole post :

... While the Microsoft / Facebook expanded partnership announcement made earlier today doesn't have anything to do with SharePoint, the publicity it generated will likely get a lot more people to start thinking or asking about the value of social networking capabilities within an enterprise and between a company and its business partners as well as its customers. Eric Charran (Senior Consultant in Microsoft Consulting Services), Dino Dato-on (SharePoint Ranger), and Greg Lang (Program Manager for Microsoft Enterprise Services Communities Tools and Infrastructure) have written a soon to be published white paper that addresses the topic of the importance of social networking in an organization and how to properly implement MOSS 2007 as a social networking solution. Excerpted below are key portions of the white paper, which I hope will get you to think about MOSS 2007 as your default option for enabling and managing social networks for business use. ...

About Office SharePoint Server as a Social Networking Solution

... Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 adds a significant social networking context to its existing collaboration and communication features and capabilities. By providing a framework for the establishment of user profiles and the ability to understand the organizational hierarchy between these profiles, Office SharePoint Server can easily connect information workers and organization members together.

Using the concept of individual, customizable user profiles, Office SharePoint Server allows users to publish their own personal and team information to the organization. Combined with information from organizational directory services such as Active Directory or other Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), Office SharePoint Server builds a foundational organizational hierarchy that is used to present workgroup and colleague information to organization members. This rapid method of presenting friends and colleagues in an automated fashion provides quick access for information workers to teams and extended resources. Office SharePoint Server logically extends existing organizational directory services, combined with additional information sources to knit together a team-based view of organizational relationships and presents them to the user. ...

About Office SharePoint Server Social Networking Features

... Through the use of Office SharePoint Server as a collaboration platform, organizations can benefit from the productivity and communication enhancements exposed by social networking features. SharePoint exposes social networking to information workers and organization members through the use of colleagues. Colleagues are a list of friends, team members and co-workers that are related to a specific person through the establishment of a user profile. Colleagues are presented to users through a user's personal site (My Site) and are built using foundational elements that are established when Office SharePoint Portal Server is implemented within the organization.

Based on the organization's implementation of products including Active Directory, Exchange Server, Live Communications Server 2005 or Office Communications Server 2007, Office SharePoint Server will mine this information at the individual user level to determine other team members, organizational managers and direct reports and virtual team members that should appear on an individual's colleagues list. The colleagues list, presented through web parts on an individual’s personal profile page of their My Site will list these related individuals and provide contact, presence and organizational information to visitors.

Through the use of colleagues, organization members can find subject matter experts, key contacts and business relationship owners in the enterprise and gain instant access to the methods of communication with those personnel. This aspect of social networking allows for increased lines of communications, quick decision making and an optimization of human resources. ...

Radicati: Business Social Software Finding Growing Traction Amongst Many Organizations

Huge market opportunity ahead ...

A new study from The Radicati Group, Inc. explores an emerging market providing more innovative means to collaborate and share information.

The Radicati Group, Inc.'s latest study, "Business Social Software Market, 2007-2011," offers an analysis of the market for Business-class Social Software. It divides the market into two segments: Business Social Software Suites, and Business Social Software Specialists. It provides market size, installed base and revenue market share, four-year forecasts, and much more.

The report defines this market as being comprised of technologies that are often referred to as "Web 2.0," such as wikis, blogs, and social networking, amongst others. While these technologies initially became popular in the consumer sector, vendors such as Microsoft and IBM offer platforms such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server and IBM Lotus Connections to meet growing demand for these solutions in corporate sectors.

According to the study, their benefits include the ability to provide an interactive platform for collaboration. For example, wikis and blogs give readers the ability to provide feedback and interact with authors, rather than establishing disconnected silos of information.

The Radicati Group forecasts that the overall Business Social Software market is expected to grow from $920 million in 2007, to $3.3 billion in 2011.

Will Microsoft Become Facebook for the Enterprise?

Related to the article in cioinsight, Lawrence Liu has posted the actions Microsoft is taking to further highlight MOSS 2007's position in this context.

As I have said in earlier posts and comments, Microsoft is very committed to taking Enterprise 2.0 to the next level. We have build the foundation to do so, now it is a matter of executing that strategy ....

... This article with the same title has been making its rounds during the past 24 hours within the SharePoint community and has generated quite a bit of excitement because it highlights the planned deployment of a MOSS 2007-based social networking service over the next several months to about 110,000 employees of Wachovia, the 4th largest bank in the U.S.

We will be posting a series of blog entries very soon about how SharePoint Server 2007 can provide a significant portion of the answer to the question above. We will describe in detail how Microsoft is already using MOSS 2007 to enable Facebook like social networking functionality within our intranet, and what non-technical issues such as privacy, security, multilanguage, and diverse cultures had to be resolved. We will also disclose at the appropriate time how SharePoint vNext will provide the bulk of the answer to the "Facebook for the enterprise" question plus so much more from the perspective of Social Computing for Business. ...

Forrester: Web 2.0 Social Computing Dresses Up For Business

More and more analysts are informing us about the impact of "web 2.0" on the enterprise ...

... Social Computing has radically changed the way people interact with both information and one another on the Internet. For example, just consider the recent YouTube presidential candidates' debates. Now it's coming to an enterprise near you. What's the value? It's the ability to more efficiently generate, self-publish, and find information, plus share expertise in a way that's so much easier and cheaper than earlier knowledge management attempts. Before Web 2.0 takes its place at the business table, you must assess the risk and opportunities Web 2.0 represents — while recognizing that Web 2.0 is not going away, no matter what IT and the legal department wishes. As with any disruptive technology, assess the strategic value and implementation plans with an eye toward enterprise requirements including reliability, security, governance, compliance, and privacy. Also, examine your experiences from early instant messaging deployments, because the tools are similar and many parallel lessons may be learned. ..

Forrester: Passionate Employees: The Gateway To Enterprise Web 2.0 Sales

As with every new technology you need early adopters. I see one of the inhibitors for Web 2.0 in the corporate space being the fact that organsiations define too many guidelines and rules ...

... Corporate employees are beginning to use Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, podcasts, wikis, RSS, and social networking in their daily lives. The adoption, however, is uneven, with some employees willing to go to great lengths to use these tools, while others steadfastly refuse to adopt. On the surface it looks like technology marketers have their work cut out for them and will need to convince prospective customers that mass adoption is both possible and valuable. In reality, this situation presents more opportunity than threat, as smart tech marketers will appeal to employees, IT, and line-of-business sponsors each in turn. A well-crafted marketing plan will target each constituency and use its interests to drive value and revenues — regardless of the firm's initial Web 2.0 adoption level. ...

eWeek: Big Software May Give Office 2.0 Apps Needed Legitimacy

eWeek runs a story about the role of Microsoft and other 'Big Software' in Enterprise 2.0 / Office 2.0

... Microsoft and other big vendors may help Office 2.0 applications win IT favor in enterprises.

In many circles Microsoft might not be considered hip enough or at least too mature now to pull off Enterprise 2.0 or Office 2.0.

But eventually having Microsoft and other big technology vendors in the game may give technologies like social networking the legitimacy they need to take hold in the enterprise, according to analysts.

Joshua Greenbaum, principal analyst for Enterprise Applications Consulting, pointed out that the movement of Enterprise 2.0 technologies—blogs, wikis, social networks—taking off in the enterprise sanctioned by IT may just come about when the big guys get in the game.  ....

... Microsoft is also offering two on demand initiatives that are relevant to the Enterprise 2.0 movement. The first is Office Live which delivers SharePoint Server over the Web as a hosted service to small businesses.

The second initiative aimed at enterprises is Microsoft Managed Services that hosts e-mail, SharePoint Portal Services and soon, most likely, voice, according to Helm. "Right now it is working with a small group of clients [for voice]," said Helm. "Long term, Microsoft could set itself up to be a major outsourcer." ...

The article shows that Microsoft is taking Office 2.0 seriously and does have the breadth  to develop in various area's. In software as well as services ...

... Despite Microsoft's moves toward adding the basic Enterprise 2.0 concepts to SharePoint there are some areas where the company is lacking in functionality, according to Forrester analyst Rob Koplowitz. "Microsoft has built a fair amount of Enterprise 2.0 capabilities, mostly into SharePoint," he said. "They're getting all the check boxes checked, and moving in the right direction [but] their blogs and wikis are not really advanced when compared to best of breed offerings from some of the pure play vendors." ...

... There are some things about Microsoft that make their value proposition interesting," said Koplowitz. "Each of these things generates content, so whether it's in a profile, a blog or a wiki, it's content and increasingly [companies] want that content under greater levels of control and better management. That's one of the core concepts of SharePoint. The fact that [IT] can manage these in SharePoint is going to be a key link to companies moving down the SharePoint path," Koplowitz said. ....

Collaborage: SharePoint and Social Software

Through my colleague Roberto D'Angelo, I came across the blog of Todd Stephens. He is the Technical Director of the Collaboration and Online Services for the AT&T Corporation and clearly a Microsoft / SharePoint enthusiast. His blog Collaborage is all about Enterprise 2.0 related topics ..

In his post about SharePoint and Social Software he makes a good assessment of SharePoint capabilities in this area ...

... After my fifth phone call and email on this topic, I think it’s time to create an informative post on a confusing topic. Can Sharepoint and Social Software exist in the same environment or must you choose one or the other. The first step in answering this question is to layout a framework for the components of Enterprise 2.0 and see how Sharepoint matches up. Using Dion Hinchcliff’s model as a guide here are the basic components.

The percentages are my assessment of how Sharepoint matches up from a functionality point of view.

- Weblog (80%)

- Wiki (70%)

- Collaboration 2.0 (100%)

- Social Tagging (20%)

- Predictive Markets (20%)

- Professional Profiles (70% wss and 150%* with MOSS)

- Document Management (90%)

Clearly, the main benefit of going with Sharepoint for all of these elements is the integration and centralized environment. However, if your company is going to go with the best of breed then you may look toward other solutions.
