For the last 10 years, Gordon Bell and Jim Gemmell of Microsoft Research have been scanning and digitising their entire lives: documents, phone calls, files, chat sessions, email, the web pages they read, the TV and radio shows they watched and listened to, where they want, what applications they had open…

Over the next 10 years, you’re going to do the same, Gemmell told the Storage Visions conference at CES 2010.

“What if you could remember literally everything you’ve ever read, everything you’ve ever seen, everything you’ve ever heard – and things that are not usually in human memory like what’s the temperature of the room, what’s the humidity. We’re entering a world where increasingly, if something can be instrumented it will be; there are sensors everywhere. We’re entering a world of total recall.”

“You will record way more of your life than in past history,” Gemmell says, because of three trends. “We’re already wandering around with digital cameras, phones with cameras that record audio and some of them know your location… as time goes by we get the sensed world.

“Storage is becoming so cheap and abundant that it blows our minds. And there’s the software; we have the technology to do something with all those bits. We have the technology to search, to analyse, to visualise the information.” …

New book : Cloud Security And Privacy

Lockergnome posted a reference to a very interesting (upcoming) book : Cloud Security & Privacy. 

Reason for highlighting this book or rather the topic discussed in this book (I haven’t read the book yet) is that this is one of the topics talk about the must but understand the least about. This goes for IT architects, security Officers and also many vendors selling the stuff.

Ofcourse Vendors like Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, etc have specialists on these topics and the services that come out of the factory meet the required standards; that isn’t the issue. The issue is where the services meet the customers. Where is the data ?, how do you authenticate ?, Are we still compliant with the security guidelines in our industry ? and many more questions like these.

From the brief overview of the topics addressed in this book I understand that it “forces” the people who should take care of Information Security in any company to consider ‘the cloud’ in that context. Boek Service Oriëntatie en ICT, 2e editie

Collega Dik Bijl heeft de nieuwe editie van het boek Service Orientatie en ICT afgerond. Via de MSDN site is het boek gratis te downloaden ...

In november 2005 verscheen de eerste editie van mijn boekje over serviceoriëntatie en ICT. Het voorzag klaarblijkelijk in een behoefte, want het vond gretig aftrek. Ongeveer 3000 exemplaren werden verspreid en daarnaast werd het vele malen gedownload vanaf deze pagina. In dat boekje benaderde ik serviceoriëntatie vanuit een andere invalshoek dan de gemiddelde ICT-er gewend was. Serviceoriëntatie (SO) vindt niet zijn oorsprong in de ICT, maar in de maatschappij en het bedrijfsleven. Binnen de ICT nemen we meer en meer het SO model van maatschappij en bedrijf over; niet omdat we dat leuk vinden, maar omdat economische en sociale wetmatigheden en technologische ontwikkelingen ons die kant opduwen. De achterliggende gedachte daarbij was: als we het verhaal zo aan de business vertellen, dan snappen ze de toegevoegde waarde van SO beter.

In september 2007, bijna twee jaar later, is er een nieuwe editie van het boekje verschenen, dat vrijwel helemaal is herschreven. De stelling dat SO in de ICT een speciaal geval is van ontwikkelingen in maatschappij en bedrijf, wordt nog wat sterker onderbouwd. De grootste verandering zit in het behandelen van thema's zoals SaaS en Web 2.0, alsmede de overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen SOA enerzijds en Web 2.0 anderzijds. In de twee laatste hoofdstukken komt de strategie en technologie van Microsoft op dit vlak aan bod, met name de medio 2007 gelanceerde Software Plus Services-strategie.

Boek : Het nieuwe werken

Mijn collega Dik Bijl heeft weer een nieuw boek opgeleverd : Het Nieuwe Werken. (Nee ik krijg geen commissie :-) )

Samenvatting

Een steeds groter deel van ons nationale inkomen, het bruto nationaal product, is toe te schrijven aan de kenniseconomie. Het structureel en substantieel verbeteren van de productiviteit van de kenniswerker is de ultieme uitdaging voor het management van de eenentwintigste eeuw. Maar het kenniswerk van vandaag wordt meestal ingericht en bestuurd volgens oude, industriële principes en denkbeelden. Daarmee is een doorbraak in productiviteitsverbetering nauwelijks mogelijk.

Het nieuwe werken is een visie waarbij recente ontwikkelingen in de informatietechnologie als aanjager gelden voor een beter(e) inrichting en bestuur van het kenniswerk. Het gaat om vernieuwing van de fysieke werkplek(ken), de organisatiestructuur en -cultuur, de managementstijl en niet te vergeten de mentaliteit van de kenniswerker en zijn manager. Het nieuwe werken. Op weg naar een productieve kenniseconomie houdt een pleidooi voor die visie, onderbouwt deze en geeft aanbevelingen aan organisaties om zelf vaart te maken met het invoeren van het nieuwe werken.

Ludlum boeken

Sinds een tijdje ben ik verslaafd aan het lezen van Ludlum boeken. Ondanks dat een groot aantal van zijn boeken al jaren geleden geschreven zijn zijn ze niet of nauwelijks achterhaald en altijd spannend tot de laatste bladzijde. Ook valt mij op dat een aantal van zijn fantasieen veel overeenkomsten hebben met gebeurtenissen in de wereld van vandaag de dag.

Om mijn collectie compleet te maken heb ik een half jaartje geleden nog zo'n 15 boeken gekocht via marktplaats.nl voor 27 Euro :-). Volgens mij altijd de moeite om hier eens te kijken als je je boekencollectie compleet wilt maken.

Afgelopen week heb ik "The Osterman Weekend" gelezen. Een heel goed boek met, zoals gebruikelijk bij Ludlum, een verrassend einde. Naief als ik ben kwam ik er ook dit weekend pas achter dat het boek al zo'n 20 jaar geleden verfilmd is, met onze eigen Rutger Hauer in de hoofdrol nog wel. Ik moet snel zorgen dat ik die eens te zien krijg ...
