ePub formaat op je Kindle en Kindle for PC

Het is weer vakantietijd, dus eindelijk even tijd voor de dingen die anders weken / maanden blijven liggen. Een van die dingen was het nog beter kunnen gebruiken van mijn Kindle voor het lezen van eboeken. Het standaard Kindle format (.awz) wordt uiteraard ondersteunt, maar er zijn inmiddels ook veel Nederlandstalige boeken in ePub formaat beschikbaar. Handig als je die ook op je Kindle kunt lezen toch ?

Via de Kindle Gebruikersgroep kwam ik het onderstaande artikel tegen en het werkt :

Naast de e-books in Kindle formaat, kun je ook ePub formaat ebooks op je Kindle lezen mits deze vrij van copyright zijn (DRM Free). Op websites als “Project Gutenberg” vind je enorme hoeveelheden boeken (klassiekers als Alice in Wonderland, maar ook verhalen van Agatha Christie!), die in het ePub drm free formaat worden aangeboden. Om dit formaat te kunnen lezen op je Kindle moet je een paar stappen uitvoeren. De eerste stap doe je éénmalig: het installeren van een programma dat in staat is om ePub om te zetten (converteren) naar het Kindle formaat. De andere stap doe je voor ieder ePub e-book dat je wilt lezen op je Kindle (selecteren, downloaden, converteren en copieren). Het programma dat ik daarvoor gebruik is Stanza, van Lexcycle (overigens in 2009 overgenomen door Amazon…).

• ga naar Lexcycle.com
• Boven aan de pagina: klik op de tab “support”
• Rechts op de pagina zie je een box met de titel “download Stanza Desktop”, klik op nu op de door jouw gebruikte desktop versie (windows of Apple)
• Klik op download en installeer het programma in je Program Files

Nu heb je de programmatuur op je PC om een ePub bestand te kunnen lezen en te exporteren naar je Kindle Content file.

For the last 10 years, Gordon Bell and Jim Gemmell of Microsoft Research have been scanning and digitising their entire lives: documents, phone calls, files, chat sessions, email, the web pages they read, the TV and radio shows they watched and listened to, where they want, what applications they had open…

Over the next 10 years, you’re going to do the same, Gemmell told the Storage Visions conference at CES 2010.

“What if you could remember literally everything you’ve ever read, everything you’ve ever seen, everything you’ve ever heard – and things that are not usually in human memory like what’s the temperature of the room, what’s the humidity. We’re entering a world where increasingly, if something can be instrumented it will be; there are sensors everywhere. We’re entering a world of total recall.”

“You will record way more of your life than in past history,” Gemmell says, because of three trends. “We’re already wandering around with digital cameras, phones with cameras that record audio and some of them know your location… as time goes by we get the sensed world.

“Storage is becoming so cheap and abundant that it blows our minds. And there’s the software; we have the technology to do something with all those bits. We have the technology to search, to analyse, to visualise the information.” …
